1. What is the main subject of your question?
The holocaust was the main idea.

2. What subject guide or guides did you use to identify the relevant databases for your question?
I felt that the holocaust fits uner many categories, I looked it up under the "history" guide.

I chose EBSCO Host.

2. What terms did you enter to conduct your search?
At first I entered "Jewish holocaust" but it didn't give me any results so I decided to ekep it broad and go with just "holocaust".

3. How many results did you retrieve?
Only 46 results.

5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful?
I looked for historical names and places in the description. I also looked at the relevance of the title compared to my desired search results.

6. Which article did you choose? Give the bibliographic information for that article (I must be able to access this article).
I chose article #20 Which is titled "LEARNING FROM SURVIVORS: THE YALE TESTIMONY PROJECT." I chose this article because after reading the decription, it caught my eye. This article is about Yale University students conducting interveiws of holocaust survivers. I think it is exactly what I'm looking for. The information is also from a primary source, people who were actually there. The bibliographical information:

Abstract:
The Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University, founded in 1981, is dedicated to recording the experiences of those who survived the Holocaust and others not directly persecuted but who witnessed aspects of the genocide. Consisting of videotapes from England, France, Belgium, Slovakia, Yugoslavia, Israel, Argentina, and the United States, the archive may be one of the largest collections of oral testimony. As of December 1994 the project had gathered approximately 3,300 witness accounts. The 1990's represent the last decade in which those who had a direct knowledge of the events of 1933 to 1945 can be recorded in significant numbers. These video testimonies can play a crucial role in helping to save the imagination from abstraction by transmitting in the form of personal stories the human tragedy caused by the Nazi crimes, whose effects continue to be felt. The form in which the information for the information was gathered made the article meaningful to me.

1. What three periodicals did you choose?

I chose News week, American Bar Association Journal, and the Journal of Chemical Ecology.


2. Name three articles, one from each of the three journals you chose.

The first article that I chose was "How Bad is it Really" By Zachary Karabell, this article was in Newsweek. The second article is "compensating Victims of Violence" By David C. Foulkes, this one was from the American Bar Association Journal. And third was "Metabolism and Canavanine Durring Development of Alfalfa" which is located in the Journal of Chemical Ecology.


3. What are the major differences among these articles?

The article from Newsweek was more of a social issue, the one from the American Bar Association Journal was about a law case, and the article about alfalfa was more educational and alot longer than the others. The Alfalfa article was written by multiple scientist and the other articles were written by only one person. The alfalfa article was also the longest article and it had more diagrams, unlike the others.


4. What are the major differences among these periodicals?

Newsweek was the most current while the other two, American Bar Association Journal and the Journal of Chemical Ecology, were much older. Newweek had current events and it is written as a magazine while the Journal of Chemical Ecology is written in the style of a book.

1. Which database did you choose for your first search?

I Chose High Wire as my database.


2. What terms did you enter to conduct your search?

I entered "Auschwitz" inot the search box.

3. How many results did you retrieve?

I retreived 3496 articles articles by only typing in Auschwitz.

4. If there were more than about 100 results, how did you refine your search terms to narrow your results?
I typed in Concentration camp in Auschwitz in the title section and to my surprise I ONLY got ONE article! But the bad thing is that I needed to find 2 articles and not 1. So I re-typed my information, instead of having "concentration camp in Auscwitz" I erased the in Aucwitz, since it was already in the "keyword" box. I retreived 25 articles this time.

5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful?
The first time, when I only got 1 result, I thaught that it was meaningful because it was very specific. The second time I determined the reliability of the article by seeing the publisher, which in this case was a psychiatry firm.


6. Which article did you choose? Give the bibliographic information for that article (I must be able to access this article).


7. How did you determine this article was meaningful?
I determined that this article was meaningful because it is part of the American Journal of Psychiatry. The American Journal of Psychiatry is written by a group of trusted psychiatrists. I also looked at the date that the article was written because I want my information to be current, and it's tricky with science journals because some things might change, there might be a new discovery or something.

2. How many results did you retrieve?

I retreived 246 results.

3. If there were more than about 100 results, how did you refine your search terms to narrow your results?
I used the boolean operators and added the word "deaths" to my search. By doing this I retreived 26 results.

4. What differences did you note in how you needed to manipulate your search terms in this different database?

I think that using boolean operators really helped me manipulate the information that I was asking for.

5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful?

I looked at them one by one and I found the one that was the most relavent to what I was looking for.

Abstract:
The article features the photography exhibition The Auschwitz Album: The Story of a Transport. The exhibition, created in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, presents photos documenting the unloading of the overcrowded trains, the selection process for slave labor or death in the gas chambers, the confiscation of property, and the preparations for extermination. A historical background of the concentration camp is provided.

I beleive that the difference between the keyword search and the subject heading search is that the keyword search brings up a wider selection of entries and you can narrow them down with the subject heading search. The subject heading search is more specific.

Research Log Entry 1/20/09

1) A. Delicious is a program that helps you tag websites and other searches of your interest. You can store, save, and share bookmarks on the web.
B. The advantage of using delicious is that you can access your bookmarks from your home computer on any other computer. It also helps you find articles or other research better and faster.
C. I think that maybe in the future when I will be researching more than I do now, a program such as delicious will be useful. But for now I think that my simple bookmarks and search engines are enough for me.

Assignment # 2

1) I tried to answer "Why is the sky blue?"

2) First I typed sky-blue.

3) I first used google,yahoo, then ask.com

4) a. I used a hyphen between my search terms.
b. I used a hyphen

5) a.I evaluated my results by looking at the various results and judging them by what I was looking for, which was the scientifical aspect as to why the sky is blue.
b. Althought the different search engines gave me similar and in some cases identical results(web pages) I think that GOOGLE focused more on the scientifical side, YAHOO leaned more towards the public opinion and entertainment, and ASK had the greatest variety(scientifical, merchendise, public interest...)
c. I think that the search engines behaved differently because they tend to have different "searchers" or "audiences". I found GOOGLE to be more informational because people who searh on google are usually students. I found out that yahoo tends to advertise and give you more artsy answers. When I used Yahoo I got music lyrics and other srtsy stuff. I think that Ask has a greater variety of results because you can just type in a whole question and different terms can be used.

For one of my classes I have to research and write about the concept of social phobias. I used google as my search engine and I found an interesting web page:Psych central . com. I tried to answer " How do phobias come about?". Since this is a casual phrase, I decided to use "phobias the brain. I got approximatly one million results. When I typed it in with I got approximatly 57 million results. That's a big difference! I think it was because of the Boolean searching. The word AND combines two things together while OR separates the search and gives you more results. For my search I questioned CURRENCY, because new technology in the medical field is always changings so I needed a currenta article. I considered AUTHORITY as well. The page I read is set up by doctors not a medical student. Also OBJECTIVITY, I want information about my topic, not somebody trying to sell me something. The object of that site was clear, they simply want to give the public pure information. After performing this search I realized that C.A.R.D.I.O is very important when it comes to researching. C.A.R.D.I.O helps you find the exact page that you want to read and use valid information from.
