CHAPTER 6...ETHICS

Research Log #1



1) Discuss how the author, the publisher, the faculty member, the library, and the students can be accommodated.

I think that all of the people involved can be accomodated in different ways and that
the way to accomodate everyone is to offer the book in different types. The book can be offered (online, in library, or as an affodable hard copy). If the book is offered in different ways then more people would have access to them...more people=more purchases. More purchases= more money for the publishers and the writers. Affordable books and e-books benefit the students and faculty members. Students would prefer to buy cheaper books and a busy student would rather buy an e-book. Faculty members would also benefit from the cheap book. In order to maximize accomodation, availibility needs to be maximized.


2) How can a fair arrangement be achieved?

Like I said, by making the book availible in everyway. That would be fair for everybody.


3) What are the challenges in creating a fair arrangement for everyone?

I think that making the book availible in all the different ways might be a bit difficult. You need to first of all know who to talk to make the availibility great (somebody at the library, collegues that are willing to buy, advertisement for students, publishing costs, online selling). There are more things to do in order to expand the avalibility of the book.







Research Log #2



1)How can a balance be achieved between protecting privacy and meeting the needs of national security? (1 point)

This is a very difficult balance to make without accusing somebody of "terrorism", or anything else that is threatening national security. I think that there is already a balance. If there is something suspicious, about the person checking out the books constantly then maybe its a threat. Or if thretening words are heard on the phone, national safety could be at stake. But nobody can ever know for sure if somebody is guilty of something, the privacy act needs to be respected. Many people get accused or suspected of if they do something that doesn't seem normal, but who are we to judge how a person is of lives.



2)How did you react to the list of challenged books (were you surprised, for example)? Do you think some books should be banned or should all books be freely available? Why?

I was a bit surprised with a couple of the books that were on the list. For example The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain. My sister read that in her english class last year! I also ran into a poster with a list of books here on campus (El Dorado Hall) that showed which books are banned from some school districts. Most of the books on that list are books that were required in my elementary, middle, and high schools; for example "James and the Giant Peach" and "Lord of the Flies". I don't think that these books should be banned. They are all good books that have taught this generation about different life styles. Books are art, they should not be banned. Just like a painting, books should not be banned.



3)How have your overall ideas about information ethics changed or not changed after completing this unit?

I think that my ideas about ethics has not changed. I always knew and grew up knowing that plagerizing, or "stealing" somebody elses ideas was wrong. But I did learn alot about the Privacy Act and copyrights like; copyright "times" are getting longer and that the general copyright is now a lifetime plus 70 years. I also learned that you cannot "copy" dance moves, I would have never know that if I hadn't watched the Disney video module.
